A crowd of around 5,000 people made Deighton Carnival one of the most successful ever.

It all began with a vibrant procession which wound its way along the circular route of the Ashbrow Ward.

The 15th annual carnival featured Isle In Harmony Troupe from Preston, Whitacre Close TRA, Diva Fever, Rhythmix Street Dance School, North Huddersfield Trust School, Kirklees IYSS and Chestnut Nursery, Chestnut Childrens Centre and Bradley brownies plus many residents and local people joining the procession on route.

It arrived back at Deighton Centre for the afternoon activities which included stalls, food from around the world, free activities in the family marquee for the kids including climbing wall, funfair, slides and bouncy castles.

The stage was again packed with performances from local groups Suga Brown, Dolly Mixtures, A2D Cheerleaders, MC Shortz, Kiran and Kornelia. The compere was Fard Fox.

The headline acts were Cardiff singing sensation Aleighcia Scott, who said: “I am so overwhelmed with the community spirit in the area and the Deighton Carnival team and members of the community were so accommodating to me and I would love to perform again next year.”

Winsome, one of the UK’s top reggae artists from London who also performed said: “The event was excellent and long may it continue for another 15 successful years."

The sports activities which included the ever popular five-a-side tournament attracted teams from all over the UK and ran alongside netball and basketball tournaments.

Deighton Carnival Co-ordinator Howard Belafonte said: “The carnival gave local people a opportunity to showcase their talent and puts Deighton in a positive light.”
