A BIG fundraising event in Huddersfield raised more than £8,000 in memory of a young soccer star.

The Sportsman’s Evening at the Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top, was organised in aid of the Huw Thatcher Trust.

The trust was set up in memory of the schoolboy footballer from Holmfirth, who collapsed and died while playing in a game.

The event was organised by John Lee and Jeremy Hoyle and they arranged for former Liverpool star Jan Molby to be the guest of honour.

Compere Pete Emmett and comedian Josh Daniels also entertained the large crowd.

Many local firms, organisations and sports clubs donated items for the charity auction and they were snapped up by the guests.

They included a Sky Sports Rugby League Experience, signed soccer shirts and photos.

Most of the proceeds will go to the Huw Thatcher Trust to help young people but some will go towards bowel cancer charities.
