The sky across Huddersfield was illuminated once more for traditional Bonfire Night celebrations.

And the weather largely stayed dry ensuring spectators attending the many displays across Kirklees could enjoy the events.

Many displays took place before November 5 but last night thousands attended organised displays at the Royal Oak, Linthwaite and at Shepley Cricket Club.

Landlady of the Royal Oak, Jeanne Brennan, said last night: “We had a different supplier of fireworks this year and they didn’t disappoint.

“The bonfire was 20ft in height and I’ve been busy making a head for the Guy earlier today.

“We do everything ourselves; my sons have been busy all day.”

Event-goers were asked to donate £1 entry fee which this year will fund the newly formed Royal Oak football team.

Jeanne added: “We have raised funds for charities over the years and this year we have kept it for the club towards kit and facilities.”

And in Shepley crowds were given a fantastic display.

Shepley Cricket Club Chairman David Hall, who helped organise the event, said ahead of the display: “We have a reasonable number coming in as we speak and the bonfire is burning well.

“The rain at tea-time may deter a few but this is the only organised bonfire in Shepley and last year we had 1,200 so it may be slightly less.

“The ladies of Shepley Cricket Club have done a fantastic job to keep everyone well fuelled with hot food.

“We have also gratefully received donations of wood throughout the week which has helped us build a decent size bonfire.”

The event raises money for the cricket club with donations to local good causes.
