MORE people in Yorkshire are giving up smoking with help from the NHS.

New figures released by the NHS Information Centre show that 26,833 people in the region kicked the habit between April and December 2011, an increase of 598 on the same period in 2010.

Director for public health for NHS North of England, Paul Johnstone, said: “NHS stop smoking services are doing a tremendous job.

“The evidence shows us that people are four times more likely to quit for good if they use the NHS Stop Smoking Service.

“These numbers are absolutely fantastic.”

A further 50,435 people in the region pledged to give up smoking between April and December last year by setting a date to quit with their NHS Stop Smoking Service.
