SAINSBURY'S is facing a blow over plans to expand one of its Huddersfield stores.

The Examiner revealed last month that the company wanted to extend its major Shore Head store by more than 16,000sq ft.

But Kirklees Council officials are urging that planning permission is refused.

They are worried because parking spaces for customers would be cut from 586 to 547.

Sainsbury's wants to build the extension where the supermarket's petrol station stands.

The store chain would move its filling station to the nearby former Shell petrol station site on Southgate.

Planners are also worried about the new filling station's impact on ring road traffic.

A decision was due by councillors at a Huddersfield Town Hall meeting today.
