PEOPLE who suspect they have a dodgy workman on their doorstep can now phone for instant help.
The West Yorkshire Trading Standards service has set up a rapid response team which people can ring.
Trading standards officers can be sent immediately or give advice over the phone.
But officials say the only way to make sure you are not ripped off is simple. Don't buy anything from people who come cold-calling at your door.
And officials stress that people offering house repair or gardening services, and who run their businesses only from a mobile phone, should be treated with great care.
Paul Smith, principal officer at West Yorkshire Trading Standards, said: "Do not deal with anybody on your doorstep.
"They will not be VAT-registered. They will not do a satisfactory job."
People scared or upset by a travelling workman can summon help by ringing the number.
Mr Smith urged people to hire reputable workmen who could give receipts and contracts.
