THREE politicians will retire from Kirklees Council.

Former Lib Dem mayors Clr Ann Denham of Almondbury and Clr Karam Hussain from Dewsbury West will not seek re-election when their terms end in May.

Holme Valley North Conservative Clr Beryl Smith is also standing down at this year’s elections, having served just a single four-year term.

Lib Dem leader Clr Kath Pinnock paid tribute to Clr Denham at last night’s monthly council meeting.

“She’s been a great member of this council in many ways – as Cabinet member for the environment and as mayor in 2000/01,” said Clr Pinnock.

“She’s been a determined champion for her ward.”

Clr Pinnock also praised Clr Hussain, who became the first Muslim to serve as Mayor of Kirklees in 2007.

“He’s reached great heights in what he achieved,” she said.

Conservative leader Clr Robert Light paid tribute to Clr Smith at last night’s meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

“Beryl has been very dedicated and made a great contribution,” he said.
