A motorist told how he was trapped in his vehicle after a frightening smash last night in Leeds Road, Cooper BRidge.

The crash happened at 7.20pm at the Three Nuns junction near Mirfield when a Audi A1 and a Vauxhall Astra were in collision at the traffic lights.

Nik Chandler, 29, was driving his Vauxhall Astra towards Mirfield, away from Cooper Bridge, when the crash happened.

Nik, a college student, said: “I was going through the traffic lights towards Mirfield town centre to go and pick up my partner Natasha.

“As I approached the lights were on green and then amber as I went through them. There was a car behind me which would have gone in the back of me if I’d stopped.

“I saw a car coming towards me and I slammed on my brakes.

“The next thing I knew I was stopped and just felt pain in my back, shoulders and neck.

“An of-duty doctor came from somewhere and was telling me to stay still. The paramedics and fire crews arrived and the fire brigade cut the roof off my car and I was put on a spinal board.

“My phone was ringing and someone answered it and told Natasha what had happened and her dad picked her up and they came to the scene.

“I think I was trapped for about 40 minutes and taken to hospital but I was immobilised for about six hours in total as they wanted to check I hadn’t got spinal damage.”

Fortunately Nik’s scans came back clear and he was allowed to go home with pain killers.

The Audi driver is believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Police on the scene assisted traffic which was severely disrupted due to the collision partially blocking the junction.

A police investigation is now under way to establish the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
