A couple in their 60s and a woman in her 90s were rescued from a house fire this morning.

The drama began just after 1am when fire crews from Ossett, Skelmanthorpe and Wakefield raced to the scene in Out Lane, Emley .

The three people were huddled in a first floor bedroom after an electrical fault triggered a fire in the basement.

Fire crews arrived within two minutes of the emergency call and were taken to hospital by ambulance, the two women suffering from smoke inhalation and the man with inhalation burns to his airwaves.

Fire survival guidance was given by control staff in what was described as a "tense" situation.

Smoke detectors were fitted but crews were unable to ascertain if they were working.

A West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said there had been a power cut earlier in the evening and it was possible that when power returned it had triggered the electrical problem in the basement.
