A CONTROVERSIAL water feature in St George’s Square has got the thumbs up.

A new study into the black granite water cascade in the revamped square has found no complaints.

The detailed report, due to be presented to a scrutiny committee next week, admits that fountain design was uncharted territory for council officials.

And that meant the final design was reached by mutual agreement rather than a deliberate policy.

But the criticisms of one councillor, who labelled the water feature “ a dreadful dribbling black wall” have not been substantiated.

The report claims: “It appears that the project team and project board were content with its proposed form and during the six months of design, discussions revolved around design details.

“During public consultation, a public cabinet report and two planning applications neither members of the public nor any councillor formally raised any concerns about the cascade feature.”
