Huddersfield is bracing itself half a month’s rain in just 12 hours.

But after the torrential rain which is expected to hit the town tonight, there is better news.

Weatherman Paul Stevens is expecting brighter, warmer weather over the weekend and into next week.

He had warned that up to 30mm could fall between 9pm tonight and 9am tomorrow.

That’s the equivalent of half of the average August rainfall.

The Met Office upgraded its yellow warning to amber for the east and south east of England after more than a month’s rain fell in just nine hours yesterday.

Places including Brighton were badly hit.

On average, 51.6mm of rain falls throughout the entire month of August.

In Huddersfield Mr Stevens blamed the unseasonal weather on a “thunderplume” heading north from Spain.

“It is basically a huge mass of supercharged hot air which heads out over the Bay of Biscay and soaks up water.

“As it heads north it brings heavy rain and thunder. We had one before in July that brought us the heatwave but this brought very heavy rain.

“After the rain, though, things clear for the weekend which should be warm and dry and by next week, we could be in for a return of warm settled weather”.
