Oct 6 2005: The Examiner reports widescale plans to change health services - including having a midwife-led maternity unit in Huddersfield. Health bosses later insist the plan is not cost-driven.

Oct 21: Dr Jackie Grunsell, a GP at Paddock and Netherton, sets up a protest group. She labels the proposals "frightening and stupid".

Nov 2: Official launch of Looking To The Future consultation document by health chiefs. They say the proposals will "improve and provide safe, high-quality services in community and hospital settings".

Nov 8: Midwives refuse to back the proposals. Women of Huddersfield deserve better, says their leader.

Dec 10: About 1,000 people march to vent their anger at the proposals.

Jan 12, 2006: Public consultation extended for a further two weeks until January 30 at the request of Kirklees councillors. Kevin Holder, chief executive of Huddersfield Central and South Huddersfield primary care trusts, says it "demonstrates genuine commitment to a thorough and robust process".

Jan 14: Some 1,500 people gather to protest against the changes in the biggest rally in Huddersfield for a decade.

Jan 18: Campaigners crowd into a Kirklees Council meeting to press for support from councillors. But a plea for a referendum is turned down.

Jan 30: Public consultation ends with a thank-you to the public for their time. More than 5,000 written responses were received, 339 people attended three public meetings and talks were held with 46 voluntary organisations.

Feb 14: An estimated 50,000 signatures were reported to be on petitions against the hospital changes.

March 18: About 500 placard-waving protesters hold one last march before decision day.

March 22: Health trust board members agree to every proposal. There are just three votes against, with five abstentions.

April 10: Calderdale and Kirklees Joint Health Scrutiny Committee decides to ask Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt to review the decisions.

April 19: Examiner presents Ms Hewitt with more than 7,000 letters of protest in Westminster.

April 27: Labour MPs Barry Sheerman (Huddersfield), Kali Mountford (Colne Valley) and Mary Creagh (Wakefield) demand an independent inquiry into the decision.

June 6: Ms Hewitt orders the Independent Reconfiguration Panel to investigate the proposed move of some maternity services from HRI.

July 9: The panel arrive in Huddersfield to hear local opinion.

July 25: Protesters hand over a petition with more than 40,000 signatures at 10 Downing Street.

Aug 2: The area's three MPs air their concerns at a panel meeting in Westminster.

Aug 7: The panel returns to Huddersfield.

Sept 14: The IRP presents its findings to Ms Hewitt.

Oct 6: The decision to move to Halifax is approved.
