WORKERS at a fashion store in Huddersfield’s Kingsgate Centre have volunteered to help in a community cafe.

A number of shop staff from TK Maxx have started doing shifts at the town centre cafe which is dedicated to helping people – including the homeless.

They have started volunteering at the Mission Cafe, which is part of the Huddersfield Mission Centre, helping with a number of tasks.

And they are also raising funds for the project, which deals with a growing number of needy people.

Five staff members from the store worked their first night shift at the cafe in Lord Street, working from 6pm to 9pm.

They helped to wash up, clean tables, make tea and talk to people who came to the cafe on the night.

The staff have committed to weekly volunteering, helping to fill the night shifts which have become under staffed.

TK Maxx also helped the Mission Centre to gain a £1,500 grant to help with a number of its projects.

Julie Leadbeater, a volunteer staff member from TK Maxx, said: “We are encouraged to get involved in local projects, we feel it is nicer to help rather than just donate money.

“The staff work the night shift because most of them work at TK Maxx full-time, so they help out after work.

“Now that we have started we hope to have more of our staff helping out and raising awareness.”

The cafe offers hot drinks and meals, board games, chat and advice to those who need it.

The cafe is open each day from 9.30am to 2pm, with experimental evening opening.
