A HUDDERSFIELD playgroup is hoping new members will help them celebrate a cash windfall.

St Joseph's Parent and Toddler Group, based at St Joseph's Church Hall on Somerset Road, Aspley, recently gained £785 of Government single regeneration budget money through the Kirklees Early Years Service.

The playgroup has used the cash to buy books, toys, arts and crafts materials, small tables and dressing-up boxes.

The group has also started a six-week Babies Into Books project, which aims to get young children interested in reading.

A member of Kirklees Early Years Service comes in to lead book-related activities with the children - including puppet making, songs and stories.

The scheme also allows children to borrow books and the playgroup are hoping to set up their own lending library in future.

However, group treasurer Maria Jedrezejczak said not enough children were using the new resources.

She said: "Quite a lot have left to go to nursery and we are looking for new people to use the facilities."

Babies and toddlers are welcome with parents, carers or childminders at the group, which runs from 9.30am until 11am every Friday during term time.

To join, either drop in on a session or contact Maria on 01484 423003.
