A toddler and mum have been left seriously injured after they were involved in a collision with an SUV in Lowerhouses.

The toddler suffered substantial head injuries whilst mum received injuries to her arm following the incident, which is believed to have occurred when the pair were hit by a black Chevrolet Captiva whilst attempting to cross the road from Little Angels Day Nursery on Lowerhouses Lane.

The child and then the mother, whose injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, were rushed to the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in neck braces, whilst the driver stayed at the scene with police officers.

They closed the entire road for two hours before re-opening it to traffic at around 7pm.

Resident, Magda Kepa, 28, who saw the aftermath of the accident, said: “The child had already been taken to hospital when I saw it but the mum was sat with a teacher before she was placed in a neck brace and waited over 30 minutes before she was taken to the hospital.

“It’s a terrible thing to happen because there are so many children in this neighbourhood.”

She and some of her neighbours now want immediate action to be taken over the road, which she said is plagued by too many cars.

Magda, said: “Unfortunately, I'm  not surprised this has happened-it was only a matter of time before an accident occurred.

“There are so many cars and people don’t look to check the road is clear or that no one is trying to cross-something needs to be done.”

One of her neighbours, added: “It’s tragic that a parent and child have to be injured before people take notice of the problem.”

Meanwhile one other resident, Reni Kerkli, 27, said that she was surprised that the accident had happened.

She said: “I’ve never known anything like this to happen before on the road.”

No appeal for witnesses has yet been released.
