A HUDDERSFIELD University student has won a top midwifery award.

Julia Brooke, 21, received one of two Travel awards in the Royal College of Midwives' annual prizes.

The award came after an assignment on home births prompted a recommendation to Julia to enter from tutor Ruth Deery.

The project, which compared the British preference for hospital births with Holland's trend for home births, became the basis for an interview and presentation for Julia.

The prize of £250 will allow the final year student to spend two weeks in Holland, where she will observe the practice.

The awards were presented at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London, in the presence of the RCM's patron, Princess Anne.
