A TOP consultancy has been appointed to create Huddersfield’s new enterprise centre.

Mott MacDonald, a successful engineering, management and development consultancy, has been appointed by the University of Huddersfield as design engineer for the Enterprise Innovation Centre (EIC).

The development, to be called the Huddersfield Enterprise and Innovation Centre, is to be part refurbishment and part new build at Larchfield Mills in Firth Street.

It will support small to medium sized enterprises coming out of the university.

As the centre needs to comply with Part L of the building regulations set out in the UK Building Act 1984, regarding conservation of fuel and power, it will need to demonstrate a 25% carbon reduction compared to a building designed under 2006 legislation.

Mott MacDonald is looking at the use of solar collectors and a nearby borehole to provide cooling and heating to parts of the building.

The firm has done similar work on a project at Manchester Civil Justice Centre.

Project director Stephen Ruane, technical director of Mott MacDonald’s Leeds office said, “We are delighted to have been chosen by the University of Huddersfield to work on this important and exciting local project.”

Work on the £8 million development is expected to commence in April 2011 and is due for completion early 2012.
