Some of the heaviest rain for years could hit Huddersfield this weekend.

Met Office experts have issued a yellow alert for the Yorkshire region , warning of torrential rain over a 36-hour period - with a staggering eight inches of rain possible.

And Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens said it could mean some of the worst conditions the town has seen in years.

The Huddersfield area is on the edge of the alert area but the Pennines are expected to see some the heaviest rain from Saturday afternoon through to the early hours of Monday.

It comes on the back of Storm Abigail, which was sweeping in through Thursday to the north of Scotland, and anotehr storm behind it.

A Met Office spokesman said: “A frontal system is expected to become slow-moving across parts of northwest Wales, northwest England and southwest Scotland.

“Rain associated with this feature is expected to become heavy and persistent, especially over hills exposed to the strong westerly flow.

“Flooding is possible either from standing water or from rivers which have remained high after the large rainfall totals seen in these areas over the last few days”.

Mr Stevens said: “It is building up to be quite a story. After Abigail, the remnants of Hurricane Kate get mixed up into a forming Atlantic low pressure system so as Abigail is doing its worst across Scotland the next lady from the sea it winding up her wrath.

“The fronts from Kate will stretch across the Atlantic thousands of miles to bring us wind and rain by Saturday afternoon. It will be followed by another period of very wet and windy weather for Saturday afternoon, with gusts around 35-40mph.

“The Pennines are likely to see a lot of rain and locally there could easily be several inches of rain, adding to what we have already had and the heavy rain likely through Friday. The unsettled weather continues into next with further low pressure, wind and rain which again may well lead to flood warnings on rivers and road flooding at times and the odd brach down. Warnings may well be necessary”.
