Deafening cheers greeted the Tour de France peloton as it arrived in Huddersfield town centre.

Children waved flags as the cyclists sped by - a pack of seven led as they hit Huddersfield’s ringroad followed by the main peloton.

Helicopters hovered above to catch the action on camera, but the only thing the spectators were interested in was lending their very vocal support to the cyclists on the streets.

Support came from far and wide - a spectator from Springwood stood alongside one from the Czech Republic.

Among those watching the ringroad race was Huddersfield University student Ingrid Buza who said: “This is the most amazing time I’ve had in this country in two years, it’s amazing to see and be part of.”

Bradley family Matthew Denith, Natasha Teale and children Kiera, six, and 18-month-old Harvey enjoyed the family day out.

Matthew said: “We’ve been planning to come for the last few weeks, it’s been brilliant.

“I’m just getting into cycling, I think I could keep up with them for the first 100m then that’s it,” he joked.

Lindley couple John and Laura Harper attended with their grandchildren, Laila, five, and Seb, three. John said: “It’s surpassed everything we thought it would be.

“The atmosphere has been unbelievable, the town looks amazing and it’s great to see everyone so positive about it.”

An inspired Seb said: “I couldn’t believe how quick they were, I want to go that quick one day.”

Also watching the race from the town centre’s ringroad was the Land family - Marshall, aged seven, was with his dad Tim, granddad Brian and his partner Gwen Ruddlesdin.

The Dewsbury family were at the front of the pack to cheer the cyclists on and Marshall said: “It was really exciting.”

Grandad Brian added: “I think the spectacle was far grander that I was expecting, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance and it was wonderful to see.”

The Duncan family made the trip over from Knutsford in Cheshire - Angus, Georgina and Jamie, seven, and Thomas, five, arrived on the train and Angus said: “We’ve enjoyed the day out, was watched it on TV and just wanted to see it ourselves.”

Georgina added: “The whole event has been really well organised, it’s been fabulous.”

There was brief disquiet directed at over-zealous ringroad stewards before the peloton arrived when, at once stage, a crowd of around 100 booed when a steward said he could “forcibly remove” anyone who stepped out of line. Mischievously, people did to cheers from the crowd.

It summed up the spirit of the spectators - they were there to have a good time and a good time they had.
