Work to restore West Yorkshire’s only listed bus shelter will start at the end of March.

The shabby red shelter in Edgerton Road, Huddersfield, dates back to 1896 and the days of trams.

Metro, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, is to restore the shelter, painting it in the old Huddersfield Corporation colours of vermilion and cream.

The grade II-listed structure, which is in a poor condition, will be dismantled and taken away for repairs.

It is due to be completed by June and put back in time for the Tour de France which arrives in Huddersfield on July 6.

Local councillors Mohan Sokhal, Judith Hughes and Mehboob Khan welcomed the restoration plans.

Clr Sokhal said: “Local people and conservationists are absolutely delighted that after many years of waiting there will be improvements to restore this bus shelter to its former glory.

“As councillors we have campaigned for the preservation of this legacy and are pleased that Metro will commence the work on March 31.”
