The enormous impact of the Tour de France on Huddersfield has been revealed.

Council officials have released the list of more than 170 roads which will closed when the Grand Depart hits town on July 6.

Many will be shut from 7am on that Sunday morning but others will have to close on the Saturday to allow time to prepare the race route.

Kirklees officials admit it will cause inconvenience as all vehicles will have to be removed from the route itself and parking will be at a premium on adjacent roads.

But they insist: “Prepare for the event of a lifetime”.

Clr Jean Calvert, Cabinet Member for Communities, is urging local people to make the most of the event.

She said: “We now have the whole list of roads which will have to be closed for the event, and while some are obvious because they form part of the route, other roads are needed for other reasons, whether that is for associated events, or for residents’ parked cars displaced from the route itself.

“But we are doing all we can to help people prepare. Our message is very much ‘get ready, plan ahead and enjoy it’ and the key to that is to get the information spread far and wide so I urge everyone to visit our resident and business roadshows.”

The information reveals roads on and connected to the route are anticipated to be closed for a minimum period of eight hours, with most expected to close by 7am and not reopen before 3pm, although some roads will close earlier.

Civic officials say the length of time is needed to allow the route to be prepared, infrastructure to be put in place and removed afterwards, the Tour’s publicity ‘caravan’ of vehicles to begin its journey through the stage, the race itself and the safe dispersal of spectators.

The route will need to be clear of all public vehicles before the road closure time.

The council are working with emergency services and health and social care providers, putting plans in place to maintain essential services and support for those who need it. Emergency access for ‘blue light’ services will be kept open at all times.

All businesses within half a mile of the route have been invited to roadshow events to help prepare for the race weekend. All residents living on a road closure or within 200 metres of the route will receive a postcard inviting them to an information event.

Residents’ roadshows will take place from the end of April on seven locations along the route. This will allow those directly affected by the closures to hear the contingency plans in place and get tips to prepare.

A dedicated telephone number for Tour de France enquiries in Kirklees has been set up on 01484 414881.
