The Tour de France nearly put a stick in the spokes of a wedding chauffeur firm.

Meltham-based Westfield Chauffeur Drive was booked by a Barnsley couple in June 2012 – six months before Yorkshire won its Grand Depart bid – for their wedding on July 6.

Company owners Anne Frost and Paul Armstrong were due to set off from Meltham and ferry the bride and her bridesmaids to a church in Hoyland, near Barnsley – normally a 45-minute journey.

In April, Kirklees Council and race organisers Le Tour Yorkshire announced that several roads along the Tour route would be closed from 7.30am on July 6.

This includes roads which bisect Huddersfield, Holme Valley and the chauffeurs’ route.

Rather than face a lengthy detour via the M62 and M1, Anne and Paul have booked themselves into the £130-a-night Bagden Hall, at Scissett.

The hotel has since offered the couple a free room.

Ms Frost said: “There’s only the M62 that’s open and if there’s an accident on the motorway we’ll be stuck.

“We’ve got peace of mind that we will be there rather than stuck in a traffic jam.”

Ms Frost added: “I was quite upset that we can’t get across but it’s outside ours and Kirklees’s control and we want to get the bride to the church...

“I don’t want to be negative about the race but due consideration could have been given to contingency plans so local companies can continue to operate.”

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “We are keen to do everything we can to ensure the couple can enjoy their big day fully and with the minimum amount of disruption.

“With that in mind, we have provided advice to the owner of the wedding car company to help the couple get to their wedding on time.

“The road network across Yorkshire will be affected by the road closures and the significant number of visitors expected to watch the race.

“We have advised that the couple’s preferred route will cross two other local authority areas affected by the race as well as Kirklees.”
