There's an action-packed summer ahead of us.

Plans for a series of community-wide events in and around Huddersfield are being finalised.

Dubbed Hypervelocity, the free summer festival begins before the weekend before the Tour de France Grand Depart.

Clr David Sheard, council leader, said “Kirklees Council is delighted to be playing host to the world’s biggest cycling race.

“The Yorkshire festival and big events like Hypervelocity are a fantastic way to celebrate and get involved whether or not you enjoy cycling.“

The action starts on July 2 when visitors to Huddersfield will be in for a visual treat as an outdoor gallery will appear in St Peter’s Gardens.

It features artwork from the artists in residence at Dewsbury Country Park.

The gardens will also be home to ‘La Grande Famille - 14 bike riding, willow sculptures made by Carole Beavis with the help of local schools and community groups.

Then, as the evening draws in, anyone who gazes into the sky will see some outstanding illuminations around some of our town’s most prominent landmarks.

Between Wednesday 2 and Friday 4 July there’ll be some surprises in St George’s Square - with no two days the same.

Over the race weekend July 5 – 6, visitors to St George’s Square can settle down for some alfresco viewing on the giant screen.

The schedule will include short local films, family favourites and, of course on Sunday, the Kirklees leg of the Grand Depart.

On the Saturday Huddersfield will welcome some world-class street performers to entertain the crowds from hip-hoping BMX bikers to dancing tea ladies there will be something for everyone.

On Saturday and Sunday there will be food and drink festival stalls in St George’s Square.

In Holmfirth on the race weekend will be a food and drink festival as well as the duck race and big screens showing cycling-themed films and all the sporting action.

Those who are watching out for the action on Holme Moss, will be delighted by the sight of 100 flags fluttering in the breeze, designed by community groups and local schools and made by artist Wendy Meadley.

Henrietta Duckworth, executive producer at Welcome to Yorkshire said: “Kirklees’ Hypervelocity is the grand finale and true to the Yorkshire Festival vision features; film, theatre, music, dance, visual art and diverse communities coming together with world class artists to get creative.”
