Eagle-eyed bike spotters will have noticed the town’s gone yellow.

Hundreds of yellow cycles and flags have been placed along the Tour de France route, as part of the celebration to mark the famous race coming to Huddersfield as part of the 2014 Grand Départ on Sunday, July 6.

Kirklees Council say they have been inundated with requests about how the public can get hold of their own decorative bikes – so they have commissioned a limited number of unique commemorative bikes.

The bikes, measuring 42cm x 25cm, are a slightly smaller version of the lamp-post bikes and are weatherproof and reversible. They are yellow on one side and red and white polka dot on the other. The council have chosen yellow to represent the race leader and polka dot to represent the Holme Moss King of the Mountains stage.

They cost £3 each.

Yellow jerseys are awarded to the rider with the lowest cumulative time. A rider does not necessarily have to win a stage to win the yellow jersey - he simply must cross the line with the lowest combined time between all of the stages. The polka dot jersey is awarded to the “King of the Mountains,” or the rider with the largest cumulative number of mountain points.

A council spokesman said: “Display your yellow bikes to cheer on the riders as they travel through Huddersfield and turn them spotty in the Holme Valley and up the iconic Holme Moss to a King of the Mountains finish.

“We are encouraging people to follow suit and decorate the town in honour of the world’s greatest sporting event”.

Anyone wishing to purchase their own bike should visit Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre, 49-51 Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, which is open Monday to Friday: 9am to 5pm, Saturday: 10am to 5pm, Sunday: 11am to 4pm, or Huddersfield Library and Information Centre, Princess Alexandra Walk, Huddersfield, which is open Monday to Wednesday 9.30am to 5pm, Thursday and Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm.
