A MOTORBIKE racing team from Huddersfield is set to take on the country’s best Formula I sidecar stars.
The BMR F1 team is putting the finishing touches to its purpose-built sidecar bike.
And the team hopes to be lining up at the start of the British championships at Donington on March 22.
The championships will include 25 teams and the Huddersfield men are hoping to finish in the top 10.
The team is made up of driver Richard Holdsworth, passenger Carl Morgan and designer Pete Moore.
They have recruited expert help from several Huddersfield firms to prepare their gleaming new machine.
Richard, 38, from Honley raced 600cc F2 sidecars at a high level for 10 years but has now made the transition to the 1000cc F1 sidecars.
The F1 sidecars can reach speeds of over 170mph and the sport can be dangerous, with neither driver nor passenger strapped in and riding inches off the ground.
Carl 26, of Huddersfield has the job of helping to balance the sidecar as it twists and turns around the racetrack.
The sidecar comes from an original design by Peter, from Shelley, and it has taken two years from the design stage to the almost-finished product.
Richard said: “Pete is an engineer by trade and has a wealth of experience. Racing experience comes from his own solo racing career over the past 30 years and he has also worked as a mechanic with British Superbike Championship racers Jamie Whitham and Jamie Robinson.
“I met him in 1999 through another racing friend and he did some experimental work on a sidecar I was using at the time.
“He has designed the new chassis and done drawings of all the components. We got Brockholes sheet metal engineers Allsopps involved and they have used aircraft grade aluminium to produce the chassis.
“The passenger platform we needed is a very special item, so we enlisted the help of Martek Composites, of Lockwood, who specialise in all things glass fibre, carbon fibre and carbon Kevlar. We knew we were in good hands and they produced a great platform for us.
“Northern Radiators in Huddersfield made a one-off radiator for us and we carried on.
“Only time will tell how this bike will perform racing against some of the best teams and bikes in the world in the British championship, but we are confident it will do us proud.”
