ATHLETIC children have taken part in their own Olympics.

Youngsters from across Kirklees gathered at Princess Mary Playing Fields, in Bradford Road, Cleckheaton, for a day of track and field events.

Children from the council's Splash summer schemes and also youngsters who attended Startrack training days, organised by athletics clubs, went head to head for gold.

Holmfirth Harriers coach John McFadzean said he has been amazed at the commitment of the young athletes.

He said: "We held two Startrack days before the festival day in Cleckheaton and the children were training some awful weather.

"Athletics is great for kids to get involved in because parents don't have to spend lots of money on equipment. All they need is a pair of trainers and a track suit."

The competitors were split into two age groups, under 13s and under 11s, and they battled it out in the long jump, 100 metres, 600 metres and javelin throwing.
