It made for a glorious festive spectacle.

And there are now plans to make the Tinsel Tractor Run an annual event in Huddersfield, with the aim of raising money for charity.

Hardy tractor-owners took to the streets of the Holme Valley to complete a 35-mile run through roads and lanes lined with snow and ice.

There were large crowds for the start of the run in the Crown Bottom car park in Holmfirth and at the Wills O’Nats pub high above Meltham when the intrepid tractor drivers stopped off for lunch.

The run was the brainchild of David Osbourne. who farms on and above Digley reservoir and is a regular on the annual Pennine Tractor Run from Shepley.

He said: “We have a small tractor run from the Harden Moss Sheepdog Trials and that has gone down well, as has the Pennine run. Someone suggested a Christmas run so we decided to give it a go.

“We circulated details of what we called the Tinsel Tractor Run and were delighted with the response. There were 27 turned out despite the weather and all the drivers had a great time. Some came over the Pennines from Greenfield and we had others from Cawthorne and Midhopestones.

“The roads were a little slippery in places but we had no mishaps. Many of the tractors don’t have cabs but we all wrapped up well and we got a good response from people along the route”.

The drivers set off from Holmfirth and took in a route which included Holmbridge, Digley, Holme, the Isle of Skye, Meltham, South Crosland, Netherton, Honley, Wooldale and Netherthong.

David said: “It was certainly a fun day and we’d now love to make it an annual event, raising some money for charity along the way”.
