Age curbs on e-cigarettes are now in force.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards will be enforcing rules on under-age sales of electronic cigarettes, inhaling devices and refill cartridges and substances.

Also known as vaporisers or electronic nicotine delivery systems, they are often designed to look and feel like cigarettes.

But the e-cig was developed as an alternative to traditional tobacco products.

An e-cig is generally heated via a battery although products are emerging which have no electronic features and are charged with compressed air instead.

There are three main types: disposable products; electronic cigarette kit that is rechargeable with replaceable pre-filled cartridges; and an electronic cigarette that is rechargeable and has a tank or reservoir to be filled with liquid nicotine.

Most, but not all, electronic cigarettes contain nicotine.

There has been a surge in the number of users of e-cigs and the change in the law is intended to protect children.

It will be illegal for retailers to sell e-cigs or e-liquids to someone under 18 and for adults to buy, or try to buy, tobacco products or e-cigs for someone under 18.

Adults caught flouting the law could be given a £50 fixed penalty notice or fined up to £2,500.

Trading standards advise retailers to be vigilant and responsible when selling e-cigs and liquid nicotine, applying the same checks as to the sale of any other age-restricted products.

Kirklees Labour councillor Ken Smith, a member of the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee, said: “It is important that retailers have procedures in place to ensure they do not break the law, which is designed to protect children.

“It is vital we all do what we can to enforce this. Anybody who is unclear about the law should contact trading standards.”

WYTS are offering a free training session for retailers who sell these types of products.
