A NEW traffic-calming scheme in Crosland Moor has been dubbed "over the top and ridiculous" by a resident.

George Woodrow, 76, said the scheme in Walpole Road must have cost thousands of pounds and was "against all common sense".

"In the space of 700 yards, there are 17 chicanes, seven speed humps and 96 bollards. Some have already been smashed and vandalised," said Mr Woodrow, of Moor End Road.

The work is part of a new child safety campaign publicised in the Examiner in May.

There have been nine accidents in the area over the past five years - and seven have involved youngsters.

Highways officers have also been visiting local schools giving extra road safety advice.

Clr Anne Denham, Kirklees Council's Cabinet boss for highways, said the safety of youngsters using local roads was of the utmost importance.
