NEW Government measures to tackle traffic congestion have been welcomed by local MPs.

Both Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood and Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford welcomed the plans.

The Traffic Management Bill, which is being discussed in Parliament this week, is designed to give councils in England and Wales new powers to keep roads clear, minimise disruption caused by roadworks and keep traffic moving.

Mr Wood said: "I know how frustrating it can be for motorists in Batley and Spen when they get stuck in traffic jams, particularly when there doesn't seem to be a good cause.

"Councils will now have more control over where and when roads can be dug up."
