A man died suddenly after sleepwalking at his Huddersfield home.

But now the tragic death of 42-year-old Steven “Stigger” Lockwood has prompted an amazing online fundraising appeal.

Friends have rallied round his grieving family to help foot the cost of a funeral and a party to celebrate his life.

In just 16 hours, almost £1,000 has been raised to meet the cost of a cremation and a wake for the engineer, who became a father to baby Isabella just six months and got engaged.

Mr Lockwood was found sleepwalking in his Golcar home on Tuesday by his fiancee, Donna Brown, who laid him down on a sofa.

Hours later, he was dead.

The funding appeal was arranged by his stepdaughter, Sophie Brown, who said: “We have never really had much and when I saw my mum Donna in such a state after Steven’s death, I knew we had to do something.

“He has so many friends who have been paying tribute to him and want to celebrate his life.

“We have been overwhelmed by people offering to help and I hope we can give him the send-off he deserves”.

Mr Lockwood was brought up in Slaithwaite and works as an an engineer at Grosvenor Chemicals in Linthwaite.

He and Donna met in Slaithwaite almost four years ago and got engaged just six months ago, when Isabella was born.

He also leaves his four-year-old daughter Katalina and his stepdaughters, Sophie and Abigail.

Everyone other than his own mum knew him as “Stigger” and his stepdaughter said: “You couldn’t walk down the street with him without someone stopping for a chat”.

Sophie, who is studying drama at Lincoln University, added: “It’s such a shock. He had flu recently but nothing other than that.

“He did sleepwalk and my mum and Abigail found him doing that on Tuesday. They put him on the sofa expecting him to sleep but he never woke up.

“We don’t yet know how he died but it is a real tragedy. My mum was in an awful state before she met this man but he changed her and as you can imagine she is completely devastated.

“As a family we do not have much and our financial status is very low. My mother wanted to have a wonderful funeral for her fiancee but knew she couldn’t afford it, as we were told it could be as much as £4,000.

“I arranged the funding page in the hope we could raise up to £500 after lots of response on his Facebook page, but in just a few hours we had almost £1,000.”

The family hope for a cremation at Huddersfield and a wake at The Commercial in Slaithwaite for the staunch Manchester City fan.

They plan to scatter his ashes at the football club’s training ground.
