RAIL travellers have again rated GNER as Britain's best long- distance train operator.

The latest national passenger survey by the Strategic Rail Authority showed 86% of users were satisfied or very satisfied with their GNER journey.

That compares with 82% giving the same response a year ago.

Only 6% said they were dissatisfied.

GNER runs services between London, Yorkshire and Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line. Trains to London operate from Leeds and Wakefield.

Some 77% of those who responded to the survey praised the operator for cleanliness of carriages - against 71% last time.

GNER beat the average for long-distance high speed train services for punctuality and reliability of trains and the helpfulness of staff.

The company said it had created "the most reliable long-distance train fleet in Britain" after a £65m overhaul of its fleet.

This had included rebuilding more than 300 carriages and introducing 12 new-look Mallard trains.

GNER is also completing a £10m investment programme to modernise passenger facilities at stations.
