Rail services between Huddersfield and Manchester were heavily delayed after a person was struck by a train at Saddleworth.

Emergency services were called to Greenfield railway station at about 5pm on Saturday.

The rural railway station was closed and services were suspended for a time with some trains re-routed to avoid the Transpennine line.

This morning British Transport Police (BTP) said that a person had died at the scene.

Reports from witnesses on social media claim an elderly man was the victim after being struck by a train heading towards Huddersfield.

It is thought passengers on the train that hit the victim were told by the conductor that he had died.

The incident left hundreds of revellers on the infamous Real Ale Trail stranded at stations around the Colne Valley and at Huddersfield Railway Station.

A BTP spokeswoman said they expected to make a public statement later today.
