Travellers have set up camp on land off Leeds Road.

According to neighbours the travellers entered the site, along the Bradley to Birkby Greenway, after cutting through a bolt used to secure the site.

It is thought the travellers attempted to move boulders blocking the site opposite F&G Commercials.

Neighbours say the police were called when the travellers arrived on Monday night with a convoy of car, vans and caravans queuing up towards Bradley.

The Examiner understands that Kirklees Council has taken steps to evict them.

Neighbour Steve McKeown, 39, said: “I saw three lads doing a recon, then they cut the bolt and started filing in.

“Then I saw eight lads trying to shift the boulders.”

Mr McKeown added: “There’s been no bother.

“They’re doing work as tree surgeons and gardening.

“I’m not bothered as long as they don’t leave a mess.”

The site, open to pedestrians and bicycles, has been occupied by travellers before, in 2014 and 2005.

In 2014, rubbish including hazardous waste such as a weed killer packet and a bleach bottle was left behind alongside camping chairs, a pram, a child’s bike, toys and a dog’s bowl containing baked beans.
