Travellers have set up camp in a Huddersfield park.

The travellers moved into Ravensknowle Park early yesterday - on the eve of a busy Bank Holiday weekend, when many families wold expect to use the park facilities.

But elsewhere, Kirklees Council staff have taken steps to prevent problems with travellers.

They have moved huge boulders on to the car park entrances in front of the Huddersfield Sports Centre, which closed two weeks ago.

The centre was closed after the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre at Springwood opened its doors.

Around a dozen of the large stones were placed at entry and exit points of the car park to deter any unwanted travellers trying to take up residence over the Bank Holiday weekend when these events often occur.

The council has previously used boulders to block access to its land after costly legal moves to evict travellers.

Earlier this year the Examiner reported how a group of travellers had rolled away huge rocks from outside a property at a business park in Bradley and stayed several days before being moved on. Other boulders have been put in place on land off Old Leeds Road and at LIndley Moor.

Meanwhile about 10 caravans and a number of vehicles parked up on land close to the Cloth Hall clock tower landmark, overlooking Wakefield Road.

Kirklees Council are set to start legal moves to get them evicted.

A council spokesman said: “The council has started possession proceedings.

“The earliest possible date for the court hearing, taking into account the Bank Holiday, will be Thursday, May 28.

“Assuming that the possession order is granted at the hearing , the court bailiffs will then enforce the order.

“The possession order will apply to the whole of the Ravensknowle Park site and all persons found on the land when the court bailiffs evict.”
