A TREE was saved from falling into a busy road by power lines this morning.

The sycamore fell at about 8.30am at the side of Woodhead Road, in Honley, but was caught by the cables.

Quick thinking staff at Rodgers Plant Hire, based nearby, rushed to the scene to make it safe.

They used a telescopic handler to secure the 30ft tree while Kirklees Council workers could remove it.

Police were forced to close one lane of the busy road for safety reasons.

Nikki Schofield, hire controller at Rodgers, said nobody heard the tree fall.

"It is strange because we did not have very high winds last night," she said.

"I had come in to work just before and I did not see anything. Then one of our drivers said there was fallen tree.

"The managing director Simon Rodgers quickly said we should get the telescopic handler to hold the tree up.

"It could have been very dangerous if the tree had broken the power lines and fallen across the road.

"This is a very busy stretch of road and there will have been lots of traffic at the time."

Council workers were working to remove tree today.
