WORKERS are sprucing up a Huddersfield street by removing old trees.

Two trees are being stripped and chopped down on St John’s Road in Birkby this week.

The work is part of a £140,000 programme to improve the appearance of the area.

The trees are diseased and are too big, meaning their roots are damaging the pavement.

Two other trees, which are also too large, will be removed from Wheathouse Road and Blacker Road.

The council’s Labour Cabinet voted in July to spend £140,000 improving Birkby.

The work will include:

Resurfacing St John’s Road and sections of Blacker Road.

Replacing guardrails and bollards.

Repairing or rebuilding damaged walls.

Installing new seats on Blacker Road.

Many other parts of Kirklees, including Golcar, Honley and Birstall, have benefited from similar revamps thanks to the council’s Small Centres Improvement Programme.
