A community has paid tribute to Holme Valley “eccentric” Adrian Smith who died after being attacked in Huddersfield town centre.

Mr Smith, believed to be a former lecturer who later became a street cleaner in Holmfirth, is fondly remembered in the town.

The death of Mr Smith, 69, has shocked the local community. Many recalled the “lovable character” who even made his own clothes – out of duct tape.

Mr Smith, who retired as a council road sweeper about five years ago, is thought to have lived alone in Holmfirth.

He suffered head injuries after being attacked outside the KFC restaurant in New Street, Huddersfield, on Wednesday night.

He died at Leeds General Infirmary the following day.

A former colleague, Andrew Thompson, 48, knew Mr Smith for many years while they both worked for Kirklees Council.

He said: “He was a friendly man who could speak to you all day once you got him going!

“He was very well spoken, intelligent and I believe he used to be a professor before taking up the job.

“I also believe that he came up here from south England, possibly Dorset.

“He is remembered by everyone at work and what’s happened has come as a big shock to us all and we all feel so angry about what has happened.”

His feelings were shared by Caroline Anstley, of Holme Valley Business Association, who had seen him many times around the town.

She said: “He was a lovable, eccentric and charming man. He was a very diligent person too.

“He was very independently-minded and used to make some of his clothes, like a jacket out of duct tape.

“I believe that a collection is now being made for him in the town.”

Rob Dixon, of William Sykes & Son estate agents in Holmfirth, said: “He popped into the office from time to time to ask about houses.

“It’s incredibly sad and people in Holmfirth can’t believe what’s happened to him.”

Another trader, Andrew Bray of Andrew’s Grocers, added: “I remember seeing him out and about with a barrow that he attached flowers and other things to.

“He was a great guy, would never hurt a fly and will be very much missed in Holmfirth.”
