THEY are hitting the road for Jack.

Ray Dawes, Lucy Buck and her sister Sophie are taking part in the Examiner’s Charity Challenge in memory of two-year-old Jack Murphy, who died in October last year.

The trio will be doing the 20km walk to raise money for The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, which offered support to Jack and his family during his life.

Ray and his partner Becky Howe, who was Jack’s aunty, took special guardianship of Jack over two years ago.

They cared for him in their Bradley home with the help of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice until his death eight months ago.

Lucy said: “Jack was a Forget Me Not child.

“Sadly he died in October at only age two having been diagnosed at just eight weeks old.

“He suffered from Menkes Syndrome, which also meant that he suffered from seizures – up to 40 a day.

“He was supposed to be going to the Huddersfield Town match when the hospice got the keys but unfortunately he sadly passed away just before it.

“When Jack was alive they didn’t have the hospice at the time, but staff provided the support like they have been doing for years. They offered support to the family.

“And The Forget Me Not Hospice has continued to offer support to the family since Jack’s death.

“I have spent six years working with the hospice doing voluntary stuff and I ran for them last year in the charity challenge.

“Now this year, with Ray we hope to do it in memory of Jack.”

Ray and Lucy work together at the North Huddersfield Trust School – Lucy in the special needs department and Ray in the student development inclusion unit.

Having done it last year, the 23-year-old Golcar girl decided she wanted to set herself a challenge again and is excited to take part on May 20.

She said: “Ray knew I had done it last year as we both worked there at the time.

“He sort of said let me know if you are doing it again next year.

“I don’t think he expected me to do it again, but we are and it will be great to do it all together.

“We hope to raise more than last year so anywhere over £400, but anything is great.”

There is a lasting tribute to Jack in the celebratory wall at the children’s hospice.

Ray and Becky were the first to leave a legacy by buying an inscribed brick in memory of Jack at the hospice.

The wall could raise £1.4m for the hospice when completed.
