CLASHES between ramblers, cyclists, horse riders and anglers are feared if a new greenway is routed along a canal bank.

Colne Valley Civic Society has hit out at plans for the seven-mile greenway to follow sections of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal between Huddersfield and Marsden.

The path will pass through Paddock, Milnsbridge, Linthwaite and Slaithwaite.

Richard Huddleston, Society secretary said: "While we are not against the idea of a greenway in principle, we believe there will be inevitable problems in having walkers and cyclists in particular on long stretches of the towpath."

He explained: "In the last few years we have had a number of complaints from walkers who have come near to falling in the canal because of irresponsible riding of cycles on the towpath."

The greenway will provide a quiet alternative to the busy A62 Manchester Road.

Public consultation is underway and a final decision on the route is expected in the summer.
