HUDDERSFIELD couples have been urged to get on their dancing shoes and provide a lift for charity.

Anzac Tea Dances are being organised across Yorkshire in town halls and community centres to raise cash for the Royal British Legion and to commemorate Anzac Day on April 25.

The fundraising bid has been launched by professional dancers Karen Hardy and Anton Du Beke – stars of BBC 1’s Strictly Come Dancing – and is sponsored by confectionery firm Anzac Biscuits.

The campaign aims to get children, parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours to enjoy an old-fashioned tea dance.

The dances can be wartime-themed or just a fun event.

Tea dances grew in popularity during the First World War by providing respite for British servicemen or women on leave.

Anzac Biscuits support the Royal British Legion by giving 4% of sales all year round.

Anzac Biscuits were named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, which fought alongside British soldiers in the First World War.

The biscuits were baked by Australian wives and mothers as a treat for their loved ones on the front line.

They were made with oats, treacle and syrup, which meant they did not perish during the long journey to Europe.

Organisers can register their Anzac Tea Dance at www.anzacteadance.com or call 0870 2401840 for further information.
