HUNDREDS of homes were left without power last night after a fire at a Dalton newsagents.

The fire started shortly after 9pm at Greenside News in Wakefield Road.

A fault with electricity cabling in the cellar prompted the fire which set fire to the boarding surrounding it and floor boarding above.

Crews from Huddersfield fire station attended the blaze and used dry powder extinguishers to deal with the flames.

They also used positive pressure ventilation fans to clear the area of smoke.

The electricity supply was restored to homes after more than an hour and a half.
