Two men were arrested on suspicion of drugs and firearms offences after a car was stopped by armed police in Crosland Moor.

An eye-witness told of the dramatic moments when police in balaclavas and carrying guns smashed the window of the car in Park Road

The officers, wearing protective clothing, dragged two men out of the black Renault and made them lie face-down on the floor.

Both were searched and handcuffed before being led away by police.

The incident happened close to the junction with Blackmoorfoot Road shortly before 4.00pm.

Police sealed off the busy junction for almost an hour.

One eye-witness said: "There were a number of armed police officers and several vehicles.

"They seemed to be concentrating their efforts around the bottom of College Street, at the junction with Park Road".

Traffic was diverted through Lockwood and Crosland Moor.

Detective Chief Inspector Warren Stevenson, of West Yorkshire Police's Protective Services (Crime), said: "At 3.50pm today, armed police stopped a vehicle in the Crosland Moor area of Huddersfield and arrested two men on suspicion of drugs and firearms offences.

"The men, aged 38 and 36 are currently in custody.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
