Two veteran cyclists are to ride 120 miles in under 12 hours to raise money in memory of a friend.

David Cowgill, 73, of Kirkheaton, and David Shelton, 69, of Dewsbury, will cycle from Kirkheaton to Skegness on October 25.

Dubbed The Two Davids Big Cycle Ride, the duo will raise money in memory of former athlete Olive Breary, a stalwart of Huddersfield’s Parkrun in Greenhead Park.

Olive, who died of cancer aged 76 in September, cheered on the runners from what became known as Olive’s Corner. Money will be raised for Kirkwood Hospice where she died.

Both Davids, who trained with record-breaking Huddersfield athlete Derek Ibbotson, had known Olive since she was 16.

Mr Cowgill said: “She was a really wonderful woman. If she was still alive today she would probably say we were silly old so and so’s for doing this bike ride but we just wanted a challenge in tribute to her.”
