TWO people from Huddersfield were killed and two more hurt in an horrific motorway crash.

A man and woman died in the accident on the M1 motorway near Leeds.

The 35-year-old man and the 32-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened at Junction 42 of the motorway near Lofthouse just before 3am on Saturday.

The dead man was named today as Paul Dwaine Williams, of Newsome Road, Newsome.

The identity of the woman has not yet been released.

Both were back seat passengers travelling in a Ford Escort.

Two men - a 23-year-old from Newsome and a 25-year-old from Sheepridge - were also in the car.

The 25-year-old is in a serious condition in Leeds General Infirmary. The other was allowed home on Saturday.

Police confirmed this morning that two men have been arrested in connection with the incident and given police bail pending further inquiries.

The Escort had travelled from Leeds on the M621, then on to the M1 before the accident.

Police said the Escort continued travelling south until junction 42, when it left the M1 and joined a sliproad which leads on to the M62 motorway.

The car crashed on the slip road, and police believe it left the road and careered through a barrier and a steel fence.

It went over an embankment before landing and catching fire.

The slip road was closed until about 10.30am on Saturday while emergency services and accident investigation experts worked at the scene.

Anyone who saw the Escort before the crash or the accident should contact police on 01924 294937.
