A mother had a lucky escape when a tree landed on her car.

Jayne Fenton was driving home to Jackson Bridge when a gust of wind blew a tree over onto her car, bringing down electricity cables too.

Thankfully, she was able to brake in time, meaning the tree landed on the bonnet of her Vauxhall Corsa.

And engineer Andrew Turner cheated death when a tree crashed down on his van.

It was stopped only by a large metal toolbox behind the driver’s seat.

Mrs Fenton, a teacher at Grange Moor Primary School, was helped by a passing off-duty policewoman and her partner who stopped.

She said: “I was driving home along Spring Lane when I saw a tree coming down.

“It landed on the top of my car but luckily I saw it just in time and was able to slam the brakes on.

“It brought down all the electricity cables too.

“It all happened so quickly, but really it was a lucky escape.”

She added: “I was lucky that the car behind me had an off-duty policewoman who pulled over. She and her partner stopped to help and sat me in their car and called the police for me, I’m really thankful they stopped.

“As the police were stretched we were waiting about 20 minutes and it’s quite a woody area, it was dark because the electricity cables had come down so I was glad they stayed.”

She’s now waiting for the damage to be assessed and says the damage to her car doesn’t look as bad in the daylight.

Mr Turner works for Huddersfield firm Crowther & Shaw and was on his way home to Rastrick.

He had been working in Leeds and was unable to use the congested M62. He went via Scholes, Cleckheaton, when the two-foot diameter tree crashed down on the van roof.

“He’s a very lucky lad” said his boss, Mark Gledhill.

“The toolbox in the back of the van took the weight of the tree and Andrew was able to scramble out. He was very shaken up but didn’t have a scratch on him.

“The van is a real mess but thankfully, Andrew was OK”.
