Campaigners fighting to save Huddersfield’s A & E unit have again highlighted traffic jams as a major concern.

And their fears were illustrated on Sunday afternoon when many drivers were stuck for up to two hours in traffic jams on the A629 between Huddersfield and Halifax.

The Calderdale Way was at an almost compete standstill because of roadworks at Salterhebble.

It meant some drivers were stuck in jams stretching back almost to Ainley Top.

At one point, an ambulance with its blue lights flashing had to inch its way past cars.

Drivers were forced to move on to grass verges at the side of the road to let the ambulance make its way carefully between vehicles.

The roadworks were carried out by Yorkshire Water and were said to be an emergency.
