Two small children have been rescued from a "serious" house fire.

The pair became trapped in the burning semi-detached home on Alder Street in Fartown, which was reported to the emergency services at 2.05pm this afternoon.

They are now receiving treatment at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary after four ambulances raced to the scene in between Red Doles Road and Tubby Lane.

Two fire crews from Huddersfield had to race against time to dampen the flames after they were made aware the pair were still inside.

Their distressed parents managed to escape and have accompanied them to hospital.

The stretch of road in between Red Doles Road and Tubby Lane is currently closed by the police while a fire investigation team tries to establish the cause of the blaze, which started in an upstairs bedroom.

West Yorkshire area manager, Chris Kirby, said: "On arrival the crews found a serious house fire.

"They acted quickly to find the children.

"We cannot at this time speculate as to what caused the fire.

"The bedroom it started in has been badly damaged."
