TEENAGE scooter rider Joe Atkinson thought he was doing the right thing when he parked up at the Queensgate multi-storey in Huddersfield.
He left his machine chained up in a spot where he had seen other motorcycles.
But he returned two hours later to discover he had been landed with a £30 parking ticket.
His offence was that he had not used the designated bay provided for motorcyclists on another level of the car park.
Now Joe, 16, and his dad are complaining that there is no sign to let bikers know they have to use the space.
The young rider - who recently took his GCSEs at Honley High School - has had his scooter for only two weeks.
Joe, of Greendale Court, Honley, said: "If I'd known about the designated place, I would have used it.
"It's so unfair. How was I supposed to know?"
His parking fine has since been paid "under protest".
The ticket was left on his machine with the reason for the penalty added on in pen.
Joe's father Giles said: "It all seems to be highly unofficial and casual.
"Where is the sign saying that scooters should be left on level one?"
A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said: "We don't comment on individual cases."
