HUDDERSFIELD University invited two top sports journalists to an open day aiming to find the Gabby Yoraths and Sue Barkers of the future.

The university's media department welcomed over 60 female A-level students interested in a career in sports journalism to their special course day.

To advise the students, the University welcomed special guests rugby league journalist Julie Stott and freelance cricket writer Tanya Aldred.

Julie is currently the rugby league correspondent for The Sun and has edited Match football magazine.

Tanya writes about cricket for the Guardian and has written a biography of England cricket hero Andrew Flintoff.

Event organiser Dr Peter Davies (pictured), who teaches on the BA (hons) Sports Journalism degree, said: "We really want to encourage women to apply for the new degree because there are so many employment opportunities now in the world of sports journalism.

"We got over 60 girls along to the even, and they were very impressed with the facilities and the expertise and enthusiasm of the Media staff."
